What is an MSME?
MSME stands for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises. In India, they are the backbone of the economy, contributing significantly to employment and exports. The government defines an enterprise's category based on two criteria: investment in plant and machinery and turnover. The classifications are as follows:
Micro Enterprise: Investment up to ₹1 Crore and an annual turnover up to ₹5 Crore.
Small Enterprise: Investment up to ₹10 Crore and an annual turnover up to ₹50 Crore.
Medium Enterprise: Investment up to ₹50 Crore and an annual turnover up to ₹250 Crore.
Who is Eligible to Register as an MSME?
Any type of business in India, including manufacturing and service enterprises, can register as an MSME, provided they meet the investment and turnover criteria. This includes sole proprietorships, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), partnership firms, one-person companies, private limited companies, limited companies, cooperative societies, and trusts.
